My child is 10 years old and I am concerned about the size of his penis. My family doctor decribed it as micro penis. Can you explain me about micro penis?
Micro penis is a condition that effects 0.6% of the male population. It is often caused by inadequate supply of testosterone during the 2nd and 3rd trimester of foetal growth. Typically a micro penis equates to a stretched penis length of less than 0.75 inches (1.9cm) at birth.
A micro penis in an adult is considered to be a penis with an erect length of just over 2 inches (5cm) but otherwise normal in all other aspects. Some cases may be identified by pituitary growth hormone and/or gonadotropins deficiency, mild degrees of androgen insensitivity, various genetic syndromes.
At birth the average stretched penile length is about 1.6 inches (4cm), and 90% of newborn boys will have a penis length between 0.9 and 2.2 inches (2.4 and 5,5cm). From birth until the age of 5 years there is limited growth of the penis, but until the onset of puberty there is very little change.
Prepubertal -On average it ends around age 9.
Testicular volume less than 1.5 ml; small penis of 3 cm or less
On average it ends around age 11, but can start as late as 15.Testis less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) measured along the long axis or testicular volume between 1.6 and 6 ml; skin on scrotum thins, reddens and enlarges; penis length unchanged
On average it start around age 11 to 12.5, but can start as early as 10 or as late as 17. It typically lasts about two years. Testes are between 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches (3.6 to 4.1 cm) measured in along the long axis or testicular volume between 6 and 12 ml; scrotum enlarges further; penis begins to lengthen to about 6 cm.
On average it start around age 12.5. It typically lasts about two years 12.5-14. Testes are between 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches (4.1 to 4.5 cm) long measured along the long axis or testicular volume between 12 and 20 ml; scrotum enlarges further and darkens; penis increases in length to 10 cm and circumference.
On average it start around age 14, but can start as late as 20. Testes are longer than 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) long measured along the long axis or testicular volume greater than 20 ml; adult scrotum and penis of 15 cm in length.
